San Pedro del Pinatar in the Southernmost Part of the Costa Blanca

San Pedro del Pinatar is located in the Spanish provinces of Alicante and Murcia, in the southernmost part of the Costa Blanca, with an area of 22 km². To the north of San Pedro are the cities of Elche (67 kilometers) and Alicante (78 kilometers). To the south lies the city of Cartagena (38 kilometers), and to the west is the city of Murcia (50 kilometers). San Pedro del Pinatar has more than 25,000 inhabitants. The town got its name in the seventeenth century when the Franciscans built a chapel dedicated to Apostle Peter. Previously, the municipality was known as Pinatar, a name derived from the extensive pine forests. In the book “Libro de la Montería,” detailing the life of Alfonso XI of Castile, it describes hunters coming to the area in winter to hunt wild boars.

Mud Baths and Tourism

In Lo Pagán, near San Pedro del Pinatar, there are mud baths that attract thousands of tourists annually, especially those with rheumatic complaints. The mud is believed to have soothing effects on joint-related ailments.

Historical Significance

The history of San Pedro del Pinatar dates back to the Roman era, with discovered remains of houses and the beginning of salt exploitation in the Coterillo salt flats. These salt flats are still in operation today. The wetlands were formed with the dunes and the beach of La Llana, the oldest of the regional parks of Murcia, serving as a refuge for over a hundred bird species, with flamingos being particularly noteworthy.

Geographical Location

The municipality is situated on the northern side of the Mar Menor area and is located on the Mediterranean Sea and partly on the Costa Cálida, also known as the “warm coast” in Spanish. Within San Pedro del Pinatar is a nature park, Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar, also known as Región de Murcia Digital. It mainly consists of lakes where salt is harvested.
