La Marina
La Marina on the Costa Blanca
La Marina is located on the Costa Blanca, approximately 25 kilometers from the Alicante-Elche airport. La Marina is part of the municipality of Elche in the province of Alicante, and it lies on the Mediterranean Sea at the foot of the Sierra del Molar, near Guardamar del Segura and next to the Salinas of Santa Pola. The village’s beach, which is 1.5 kilometers long, shares the same name. The main access to La Marina is via the N-332 national coastal road.
This idyllic coastal town is ideal for a vacation or for permanent residence. With an average daily temperature of 18 degrees Celsius in winter, it is considered one of the healthiest places in Europe. The long sandy beaches, bordering dune areas with pine trees, are clean, and even in the high season, there is plenty of space. Right on the Mediterranean Sea, you will find cozy places where you can eat well, have a coffee, or enjoy a beer for a reasonable price. In the urbanization on the edge of La Marina, you will find several shopping centers, a bodega, bars, restaurants, and a medical center in the immediate vicinity. You can also get all your fresh produce at the weekly market.
The history of this municipality is closely linked to the founding and work of Cardinal Belluga. He carried out significant work in the Vega Baja del Segura region, promoting the development of new agricultural land by establishing locations for new agricultural areas by draining swamps for agricultural use. The old village of La Marina was a swamp area in the Vega Baja. This location was moved to the coast, and the old site saw the beginning of residential construction, now known as the Urbanization of La Marina with views of the coastline. La Marina also has a beautiful dune area with sub-tropical vegetation, including many Agave plants.
The economy of La Marina was formerly focused on agriculture and fishing but now is more oriented towards sustainable tourism thanks to a very restrictive policy on urban development. The marina has an international resort-camping of the highest category “Great Comfort.” This is the main tourist attraction for foreigners; for local tourism, the award-winning Blue Flag beach is the main tourist draw. The marina also has two hotels and numerous restaurants in the urban area.
