**San Fulgencio on the Costa Blanca in the Vega Baja**

San Fulgencio is a municipality on the Costa Blanca in Spain. It is located in the comarca Vega Baja del Segura in the province of Alicante, part of the autonomous region of Valencia. The municipality has an area of nearly 20 km² and has a population of just over 12,000, not including the many tourists who visit. San Fulgencio comprises the old historic core and the nearby urbanization La Marina.

In the 1980s, the influence of tourism in the entire Vega Baja del Segura brought a large influx of new residents to San Fulgencio. The new residential areas (urbanizations), mainly intended for the tourist sector, are built closer to the coast than the historic core of San Fulgencio. The municipality is close to the coastal towns of La Marina and Guardamar del Segura.

**Historical Significance**

There are some archaeological finds from the early period of San Fulgencio. The discoveries at La Escuera and El Oral date back to the sixth to ninth centuries AD, including architectural remains, ceramics, and pots from the Punic period. The archaeological museum houses several finds from the Iberian and Greek antiquities. In the historic core, there is a parish church from the 18th century.

**Tourism and Economy**

The main source of income in the region is the tourism sector. Many tourists visit the municipality, mainly staying in bungalows and apartments in the urbanization La Marina. There are many hospitality venues and tourist shops, as well as a municipal sports complex. Although San Fulgencio is not directly on the coast, the beach of the coastal village La Marina is just a few kilometers away. For more entertainment, tourists can visit the larger beaches of Guardamar del Segura and Santa Pola, as well as the popular nightlife spots in Torrevieja to the south and Elche to the north of the municipality. Markets take place daily in various surrounding towns. In the old core of San Fulgencio, there is a market every Tuesday, and in the urbanization La Marina, markets are held every Thursday and Sunday.

**Accessibility**

The municipality is accessible from the east (seaside) via the N-332 coastal road and from the west via the CV-860 highway. Several Vegabus bus lines connect the municipality and the urbanization La Marina with Alicante, Orihuela, Elche, and Torrevieja. Alicante International Airport in El Altet is about 27 kilometers north of San Fulgencio.
