Guardamar
Guardamar del Segura
Guardamar is located about 10 kilometers from Torrevieja and La Mata on the Costa Blanca and has 16,000 inhabitants. The village owes its name to the river La Segura, which flows through the center of the village. Guardamar del Segura has historically been of strategic importance, serving as a fortress against sea attacks. This fortress is now open to the public and can be climbed via a staircase to the top, offering stunning views of the sea and the hinterland of the Costa Blanca.
There is no mass tourism here and only limited high-rise buildings. Guardamar is a relatively quiet village but has all the amenities one would expect from a Spanish coastal town. The village has a very relaxed atmosphere. It is also just a stone’s throw from the well-known Parque Natural de la Mata.
Additionally, there are two lively weekly markets, one in the center and one in the Campo. The festive market is inland and not far from the coast. A market that we North Europeans would describe as a fair. This market is very popular and is visited weekly by thousands of people from the region. You will encounter people of various nationalities, such as Belgians, Dutch, Norwegians, and Swedes.
In the past, Guardamar was at risk of being buried under advancing sand dunes. They managed to stop the sand by planting long rows of pine trees, a combination that makes Guardamar del Segura unique. Today, the eastern part of Guardamar del Segura is completely taken over by the “Dunes of Guardamar,” a gigantic forest park of about 840 hectares, which has also been declared a Protected Nature Reserve.
Take a walk through Park Reina Sofía with its beautiful water features, waterfalls, and long walking paths where you can admire the local fauna and flora.
The coastal town also has a 15 km long stretch of coastline with wonderfully fine sandy beaches. The most visited beaches are Playa Centro and Playa La Roqueta. Those who prefer deserted beaches will enjoy Playa del Moncayo or Playa de Los Tusales, at the mouth of the Segura. All beaches are perfectly equipped and provided with the necessary facilities.
