The Vega Baja del Segura is an area in the province of Alicante in the Spanish autonomous region of Valencia on the east coast of Spain on the Costa Blanca. The total area of the Vega Baja is 957 km² and has approximately 400,000 inhabitants. The area of the Vega Baja del Segura has 27 towns or municipalities.
Vega Baja del Segura is a region of the autonomous community of Valencia in Spain and located in the southernmost tip of the province of Alicante, on the border with the region of Murcia. The capital Orihuela is an important historical city. This city, located on the plain, is part of the largest municipality in the region and is the second in terms of population with more than 80,00 inhabitants.The port city of Torrevieja, located on the coast, is the largest city in terms of population with more than 100,000 inhabitants.
The Vega Baja is also home to the Embalse de La Padrera and provides a large part of the Vega Baja with water and irrigation water for farmers. The somewhat higher reservoir, with the adjacent village of Torremendo, is a beautiful protected hilly nature reserve with many almond trees, pine forests and the hamlet of Rebate with the Spanish family restaurant of the same name.There are also opportunities for walking, cycling, horse riding and quad biking, but also to just look and admire the nature. You can drive all the way around it and that takes about half an hour by car. The water is always a beautiful blue-turquoise because of the crystals that are in the water, and in the evening you can enjoy the many birds and a beautiful sunset.
The relief of the area is formed by the plain of the Segura River, which has its origins deep in the interior of the province of Murcia. The Segura is useful for irrigated agriculture, which consists mainly of citrus groves, artichokes, broccoli and olive groves. The Segura flows into the Mediterranean Sea in Guardamar on the Costa Blanca. The surrounding landscape is characterized by contrasting droughts in mountainous areas with a number of dry crops.
